When George and Mary D’Angelo decided to downsize, it meant selling a pristine 14-acre property and 12,600 square-foot home that they built in 1993. Its marble floors and open rooms offered elegant spaces for incredible artwork, but as they move from this estate to a much smaller home, they’ll be parting with artwork they collected over a lifetime.

Most Lake Erie residents know that the Erie couple dedicated their lives to medicine and performing arts. Dr. George D’Angelo performed the first open heart procedure at Hamot Medical Center in 1962. The philanthropic couple’s name adorns the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College, the famed D’Angelo School of Music, and the D’Angelo Young Artist Competition. That’s just a smattering of their contributions to the area.

When Lake Erie LifeStyle visited their home, George and Mary offered a peek at the collectibles that will be sold at a by-invitation-only sale to be held at an undisclosed time in September. Their collections reveal a deep love of music and international art, but not a penchant of buying for the sake of collecting.

“We bought paintings and sculptures because we liked them,” Mary says.

On a tour through their home, the couple points out paintings and sculptures that demonstrate their diverse interests. Crystal swans rest on mirrored “lakes” in several rooms. In his office, George has a collection of busts representing one of his favorite characters, Don Quixote. He also has busts of Shakespeare and many others.

The art they collected reminds them of trips to New York, Scottsdale, Palm Springs, and overseas. With each description, they share a memory and a laugh together, and George proudly announces that they have been married for 61 years. George and Mary share favorites stories of gifts they presented to one another, and their conversations are peppered with, “Oh darling, remember this one?”
